The price indices and weights for the three groups of products included in the calculation of consumer prices a country index. Product Group: X Index: 400 Weight: 5 product groups: the Index: 120 Weight: 3 Product Group: Z: 80 Weight: 2 How the cost of living increased since the base year? A. 52% B. 60% 152% 520% CD This is a past Cambridge exam question .. the answer is C. .. I am completely lost on the issue can someone please explain (including calculations) for me?
Let us first X, YZ separately. X: Increase = (400-100) / 100 = 300% Y: Increase = (120-100) / 100 = 20% A to Z: Increase = (80-100) / 100 = 20% of the total weight is 5 +3 +2 = 10. This means that account for X 10.5 = 0.5, and 3 / 10 = 0.3 and Z 2 / 10 = 0.2 while the overall increase was 0.5 * 300 +0.3% -0.2% * 20 * 20% = 152%
